Hurricane Preparedness Week 2022

May 01, 2022
Each year, the National Weather Service and the Florida Division of Emergency Management observe Hurricane Preparedness Week. Florida residents are encouraged to use this week to prepare for the upcoming Atlantic Hurricane Season, which begins June 1, 2022.

The City of Jacksonville Emergency Preparedness Division invites you to take the following steps to ensure you are JaxReady:

  • Determine your risk: take the time to assess the risks to your home or business and have a plan in place to mitigate any impacts.
  • Learn your evacuation zone: determine if you live in an evacuation zone and be sure that you understand storm-related evacuation orders. Plan multiple evacuation routes if a storm impacts our area. Visit this hyperlink to search your evacuation zone.
  • Assemble an emergency supply kit: make sure your supply kit meets your family's needs and has enough supplies to last every individual and pet at least seven days. Visit this hyperlink for a printable list.
  • Get an insurance checkup: contact your agent to determine if you need to update your coverage. Don't forget to keep copies of important insurance documents in your emergency supply kit.
  • Strengthen your home: mitigate damages to your home by protecting areas where debris can cause harm. Take time now to purchase supplies to secure your windows and trim trees.
  • Help your neighbors: check in with your neighbors before hurricane season to see if they need help preparing. If you are able, offer to help stock their emergency supply kit, help them determine their evacuation zone, or help them create a plan.
  • Create a disaster preparedness plan: design a plan that works best for your family or business. Use the templates located at this hyperlink to get started.
