JaxReady and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department remind residents to "Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety"

October 01, 2021
This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety!” works to educate everyone about the different sounds the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms make.
Fire Prevention Week is October 3-9, 2021, and this year's theme is "Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety." The campaign works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

"Knowing the different sounds of fire protection equipment and what they mean can save you, your family, and your home," said Jacksonville's Fire Marshal Chief Kevin Jones.

JaxReady and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department want to share safety tips to help the Jacksonville community "Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety”:
  • A continuous set of three loud beeps—beep, beep, beep—means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out.
  • A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.
  • Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.
  • Make sure your smoke and CO alarms meet the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years.
To ensure that community members have access to this lifesaving equipment, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department has a Smoke Detector Program. This program provides and installs free smoke detectors for any qualifying Jacksonville resident living in a single-family or two-family residence. The department also will install replacement batteries in existing smoke detectors at no charge. To learn more, visit myjfrd.com.
