The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and Humane Society provide guidance about Disaster Preparedness for your pets.
- Ensure your pet has an ID tag and microchip with updated contact information in case you get separated and someone finds your pet.
- Remember if it isn’t safe for you, it isn’t safe for your pets.
- Evacuate early. If you wait too long, you may be evacuated by emergency officals and told to leave your pets behind.
- Find a safe place to stay ahead of time that takes pets in case you need to evacuate.
- Put together a disaster preparedness kit for your pets. Basic items may include:
- Food and water for at least five days
- Medications and medical records
- Cat litter box, litter, litter scoop and garbage bags
- Sturdy leashes, harnesses and carriers
- Current photos of you with your pets and descriptions of your pets
- Contact information for your veterinarian
