A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect for our area, effective through tomorrow evening. Coastal and low-lying areas may see increased flooding as high tide begins this evening.
While we will get a slight reprieve from the rain tomorrow, impacts from Tropical Storm Isaias are expected to begin Friday afternoon as the system moves through the Gulf. Remnants from the strengthening tropical storm are forecast to bring additional heavy rainfall and strong storms through the weekend.
Recent rainfall has left the ground across Duval County saturated. With nowhere for additional rain to soak in, flooding can develop quickly. Saturated soil also loosens tree roots, so even moderate wind gusts can bring down trees and large limbs.
We urge everyone to stay weather-aware, as these weather systems impact our area. Here are some important safety tips to keep you prepared and JaxReady:
- Sign up for weather alerts: Ensure you have a way to receive severe weather notifications. Visit JaxReady.com/ALERTJAX to sign up for ALERTJAX messages.
- Avoid floodwaters: Never attempt to walk, swim, or drive through flooded areas. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down.
- Turn Around, Don’t Drown: It’s difficult to gauge the depth of water on flooded roads. Just 12 inches of water can sweep a vehicle away.
- Find alternate routes: If you encounter barricades, debris, or standing water, seek another way to your destination.
- Drive carefully: Slow down. Wet roads increase stopping distances.
- Use headlights: Keep your headlights on to improve visibility for you and other drivers.
- Watch for falling trees: Avoid parking or standing under trees during gusty winds. Look for warning signs such as leaning trees, cracked trunks, exposed roots, or soil lifting at the base.
- Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with the latest weather forecasts and updates from official sources such as the National Weather Service and the Emergency Preparedness Division (JaxReady). Being informed will help you make timely and safe decisions for you and your family.
