Permanent Sales Tax Break on Disaster Supplies Takes Effect July 1, 2025

July 01, 2025
Beginning on July 1, 2025, the state is making permanent sales tax exemptions on essential disaster preparedness items, removing the need to wait for seasonal tax holidays to stock your emergency supply kit.

The law, which is part of the state budget enacted earlier this summer, abolishes taxes on the following supplies year-round:

  • Batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 6-Volt, 9-Volt)
  • Portable Generators (capable of producing 10,000 running watts or less
  • Waterproof Tarps (must be 1,000 square feet or less)
  • Portable Gas Cans (5 gallons or less/gas or diesel)
  • Ground Anchor Systems and Tie Down Kits
  • Smoke Detectors or Smoke Alarms
  • Carbon Monoxide Detectors
  • Fire Extinguishers (must be portable and manually operated)
  • Life Jackets
  • Sunscreen (not cosmetic)
  • Insect Repellent
